Orchestra Tips: Overuse of Colle'

There are little tiny things that separate good players from true professionals. In orchestra, it becomes obvious to me within 5 minutes of watching people. Rhythmic clarity, appropriate bow articulations, and awareness of those around you are 3 biggies. Thank you Lora for the opportunity to speak with you about these powerful women in Uganda. Their potential is so inspiring and it is Her Mighty Hands’ great pleasure to help them realize that potential by granting them access to education through smartphones with extension videos uploaded on them.

I love the Her Mighty Hands model because it is not just a hand-out. It empowers these incredibly hard-working women to provide for their families by giving them the knowlege they need. "Teach a man to fish and he eats for a whole week" except in this case, "Teach a woman to farm, and she feeds her family for life, teaches her daughters what she knows, sends her children for higher education".....the ripple effect goes on and on.

Wow! What a great cause. I was in Uganda briefly around 1999, I think, and it was a very, very difficult place for women and for people generally back then and I'm sure it still is. Thanks for bringing this effective way to help to my attention 😊👍

4 and 5 did seem to lift the life of the notes as trial continued. Also they sat down on the draw less abrasives I thought. I do not play violin .I play guitar however not as a melody player. I enjoy chords to support the vocal. Ae. Good listening experience.

Am adult beginner when I start to play violin mt body aching all over especially my left hand neck and shoulder also my right hand thumb. After 1.5 years playing I can use vibrato at the first time I try it every day find the problem and solution for 1 month very exhausted, stress full and almost give up. Right now I come back to fundamental left hand build by finger lifting excercise and realize how stif my sweet and how weak my pink finger😂. I can control my pinky finger but for my sweet I almost die😂. Maybe because am 30's.I wanna give up actually its realy need much double effort when are adult beginner

Why not just get a smaller violin ? A 7/8 violin? The left hand finger reach is also a real issue to work around.

After a lifetime of watching and listening to many talented players (I grew up in Union Grove ,N.C. (where one of the original and oldest fiddlers conventions was held yearly for over 100 years) I decided to teach myself to play violin (it will always be a "fiddle" to me lol). I could tune up and play by ear along to several CD's immediately, easily using the bow and getting absolutely smooth pleasant in key single-string sounds. It all came so easily (I didn't realize how rare that ability was until talking to some music teachers) HOWEVER double stops stalled my efforts. What throws me off is when playing the E &G strings is how can they be played without contacting the D & A strings... since the fret board is "rounded" with those 2 center strings higher than the G & E.I live in an area where any teacher is going to be too far away for personal instruction to be possible. this issue caused me to "give up" several years ago but I am going to try again to figure it out.

Good to know, Laura. I have wondered about the extent of Colee. At least I wasn't an offender, however I might have been, had I played in an orchestra. Being in my 80's, I don't expect to ever play in an orchestra (darn). I appreciate the fact that you were moved to give me this info. Sorry for the frustration, but it served a purpose.

I think I may have found it. Is the title "The Masters of the Violin"? Why is hardly anything known about Crickboom? It appears that very few use his method. My daughter is studying the violin and her professor uses it (he studied in Germany under a famous Russian violinist.

Thank you for the informative videos! I’m a violist residing in DFW and we get so many drastic fluctuations in humidity my viola goes through 6-8 open seams a year. I came to your page because I have another open seam but no time to get to the luthier before next gig. I would like to add that instead of running and and trying to find C clamps and cork, (or leather as another suggested) simply use your CHIN REST as a clamp! Cheers and happy practicing!

O.M.G. What a SIMPLE solution!!! Lol! Hey Emily, in my open seam woes, a violin shop finally it right, cleaned out the joint, and glued it properly and it has been fine for 1 year now. So maybe you can find a permanent solution for your viola. Meanwhile, try to keep the humidity stable and use the emergency method when needed. Thanks for the awesome tip!
